SPECIAL EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

RESOURCE: SPECIAL EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Friends of the United Nations has launched a Special Earthquake Appeal to assist people affected in recent earthquake areas.

For this Special Appeal FOUN is partnering with Red Cross, UNICEF and Save the Children as our beneficiary aid distribution partners. These partners will determine the best deployment of funds raised in this Appeal.

HAITI: A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and devastated Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010. Although the exact number was difficult to determine, the highest unbiased source estimated 220,000 people were killed. Haitian government sources were higher. The Presidential palace, Parliament and many other important structures were destroyed, along with countless homes and businesses, leaving many homeless. Due to its severity the country has yet to recover from this and subsequent disasters.

JAPAN: The 2011 earthquake and tsunami was a 9.0-magnitude undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred on Friday 11 March 2011. The epicenter was approximately 72 kilometres east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku, with the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 32 km.

International rescue teams continue sifting through the debris in search of survivors, while international aid agencies including the Red Cross and World Vision have started distributing aid among the survivors.

Japanese government advice and information on the nuclear crisis and evacuation zones around the Fukushima nuclear power plant is no longer in lock step with the US and other global countries such as the UK and France. The US Government has urged the evacuation of its citizens within a 80 Kilometre radius of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Japanese government has so far ordered evacuations in a 20-kilometre, or 12-mile, radius of the same plant, and urged people within 20 to 30 kilometres merely to take shelter.

Given the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the subject of nuclear exposure is very sensitive in Japan and the population is conscious of radioactive contamination's grave consequences.

THE DISASTER

The worst-affected areas stretch over a distance of almost 600 kilometres. More than a million people still have either no water or electricity.

More than 73,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged by the earthquake and tsunami. More than 360,000 people remain displaced or evacuated to about 2,150 evacuation centres across the affected region in north east Japan.

Authorities have evacuated more than 200,000 people from the 20-kilometre exclusion zone around the Fukushima nuclear power plant due to leaks of radiation. Aid groups and volunteers are playing a key role in caring for thousands of people evacuated from the 20 kilometre exclusion zone surrounding the affected Fukushima plants.

FOUN is not seeking individual in-kind donations of items.

YOU CAN HELP

You can assist those people affected by the earthquake by making a donation.

The funds raised through this appeal will be used to support communities affected by the earthquake in Japan and the resultant tsunami that reached numerous countries around the Pacific Rim and within the Pacific Ocean.

The funds will be used to:

Provide earthquake and tsunami affected communities, displaced families and their host families with emergency relief, equipment and recovery assistance, send specialist aid workers to assist in relief, recovery and longer term disaster management operations.

Support the work of UNICEF, Save the Children, and Red Cross Society and other Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from affected countries in assisting people devastated by this disaster.

Should the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer term needs of the people in the affected areas, Friends of the United Nations will direct the excess funds to other emergency preparedness and response initiatives in the Asia Pacific region. Any interest earned on donations will be invested back into the appeal.

Foreign nationals seeking information about friends or relatives in Japan are advised to try contacting their friends or relatives first or contact their Consulates, Embassies, or their government's Foreign Affairs ministries.
